How to Remodel Your Mobile Home to Look Like a House

There are certain qualities of a mobile home that make it look, well, like a mobile home. I'll walk you through each of these and give you tips on how to change your mobile home in a house on the interior by upgrading these features. The work covered here can be done without hiring a professional.

      Replace fixtures and decorative glass.
      FIXTURES
Cabinet handles, faucets, and hinges, are usually a gold color. Get rid of these and replace them with brushed nickel or a similar neutral color. If you have decorated glass in cabinet doors you have two options. The first is to replace it with clear glass or another style of decoration that is more appealing. The second is to replace the glass with solid wood panels and stain them to match your cabinets. A home remodeling store can help you find the right color of stain and decorative adhesives to apply to the clear glass.

Before, during and after photos examples of trim work.
      TRIM
Mobile home trim is thin and stapled onto the walls. It's used to cover the seams between sheet rock on the walls and also to cover gaps left from carpentry work like installing doors. This trim is easily removed. Don't forget to clean up all the staples. It's faster to hammer them in then to remove them, but there are so many that you're likely to hit one with a nail when you hang the new trim, so just pull them out. Next mud and sand any gaps that won't be covered by the new trim. Now you're ready to install the new trim. Don't go cheap here. Decorative trim brings out the details of a home and showcases the homeowner's style.

      FLOORING
One of the most important things to remember about mobile home flooring is that it was installed before the walls were built. That's right, the floor was put down, carpet and tile, and then the walls were built on top of it. Now what does that mean to you? When you start replacing the flooring it's going to be harder than in a house. If you're replacing carpet, use a knife and cut along the wall to remove the carpet. Next, you'll spend hours picking carpet out from under the wall just far enough that you can lay the new carpet or flooring. I put hardwood flooring in my mobile home, but you can put tile, laminate, or carpet in its place. Just keep in mind that moving the mobile home later could cause things like a tile floor to crack because of the flexing of the frame.

      WINDOWS
Replace blinds with curtains or roman shades. Add detailed touches to window treatments to make it feel like a home. You can make your own curtain rods. Buy dowel rods and end caps. Drill a hole in both ends of the rod and screw in the end caps. Paint to desired color. Buy wooden holders and paint to match. I made mine for about $10 each.

      ADDITIONS
There are other things you can do like add a fireplace, replace vent covers, or position furniture to make rooms look larger.

This went from a single door to a double door!
      DOORS
Mobile home doors are not the same size as doors found in houses. They are taller and more narrow. This makes closets a pain to use. This requires some skill, but here's photo of a closet I did and I have NEVER tried anything remotely similar to this in my life and it turned out fine. Basically you can "rip" door spaces to be larger.

      DETAILS
Personalize your home by adding those one of a kind, hand crafted items. I had this long buffet countertop that was awkward. I built these wine glass and wine bottle holders and it really changed the space's usefulness.
